Uses for Lye Soap
Overview
Many of our great-grandparents didn't buy soap from the store. Instead, they had to make their own soap from a process of cooking lye and lard together. This usually took place once a year and there had to be enough made to last till the next year. People are still making lye soap and have found many more uses for it than just bathing.
Step 1
Use lye soap for washing clothes. After you have either bought or made your own lye soap, get it ready for washing clothes. This can be done by either shaving off thin pieces of the lye soap or grating it on a grater. You then dissolve the lye soap in hot water and pour into the washing machine. If you make the lye soap yourself, then make one batch a little stronger for clothes washing. Lye soap works well on getting stains out of clothes, and for extra cleaning, add a little borax to your laundry.
Step 2
Remove the odors from your hands, such as onions or fish, with lye soap. Some hunters wash themselves and their clothes in lye soap to remove human smells.
Step 3
Mop your floors and wash your dishes with lye soap for extra cleaning. You can also use it to get some stains out of carpet, like tea and dirt.
Step 4
Relieve some skin irritations such as dry, itchy skin or eczema by using lye soap. Dampen the bar of lye soap and rub onto the irritated areas of skin. It doesn't leave a greasy feeling or leave a powdery film when it dries. If you are going to be working around poison ivy, then dampen slightly and rub on any exposed skin. When you get done, take a hot shower with the soap and rinse away from your body so any poison ivy residue will wash off of you.
Step 5
Take a bath or shower with lye soap for clean, smooth and supple skin. Washing your hair with lye soap can help you get rid of dandruff plus make your hair soft and silky. Lye soap is made of all-natural ingredients with no perfumes, dyes or hardeners. This makes it better for those who have allergies and sensitive skin. It can also help to relieve dry, itchy skin by acting as a moisturizer.
