How to Make Thanksgiving Soap Molds
Overview
Create a new holiday tradition by making Thanksgiving soap molds and giving them out to your relatives during the festive holiday. Making Thanksgiving soap molds can range from the highly labor intensive process of making it from scratch, to the easier melt and pour method where you purchase ready made soap and melt it in the microwave, before adding dye and color to your Thanksgiving soap mold. These steps focus on the easier method.
Step 1
Decide on your Thanksgiving soap mold. Are you going to do a turkey, the traditional pumpkin or a cornucopia? If this is your first soap making experience, it is best to stick with one or two simple designs and make multiple molds of that soap for favors.
Step 2
Decide on the type of soap you will be using. For a single color mold, choose a white-based melt and pour soap. This can be a goat milk melt and pour soap for a more luxurious feel on the skin.
Step 3
Decided on a scent for your soap. Choose something traditionally associated with Thanksgiving, such as pumpkin or spiced cider.
Step 4
Cut your soap base into 1-inch square blocks. You will want to melt a small batch at a time, so it is recommended to cut up about 9 oz. of soap, which will be enough to fill three soap molds.
Step 5
Place the blocks of soap into your glass measuring cup. Put the measuring cup in the microwave and heat it on medium for 45 seconds. Take the soap out and stir. Place back in the microwave and continue this process in 20-second spurts until the soap is smooth.
Step 6
Add one drop of soap dye at a time to the soap mixture. Make sure to continuously mix the soap while adding the color.
Step 7
Add a few drops of essential oils to your soap while stirring. The standard measurement is .25 oz. of essential oil to 1 lb. of soap. Do this while continuously stirring the soap.
Step 8
Pour the soap into the molds. Allow each mold to set two hours. Flip the soap over and pop out of the mold. Wrap your soap mold in decorative plastic and a ribbon.

tip
If you are layering soap, you can rub a quick coat of alcohol between each layer of soap to prevent the colors from bleeding.
Soap needs very little dye, and it is easier to correct by adding one more drop rather than having to melt another block of soap.
warning
Do not pour soap heated above 145 degrees F into a plastic soap mold.
