How to Make a Soap Mold
Overview
When making homemade soap, you need a soap mold. By pouring the hot soap solution into the mold, it solidifies in that shape. It's actually quite simple to make a soap mold, using a variety of commonplace items. Materials such as cardboard boxes, plywood, cookies cutters and metal cans can be used to make molds. While you can make a mold in any shape and size you wish, the easiest and most commonly used molds are circular, rectangular or square.
Cookie Cutter Soap Molds
Step 1
Cut a piece of cardboard to approximately 6 by 6 inches.
Step 2
Cover the cardboard with wax paper.
Step 3
Place a cookie cutter on top of the cardboard. You can create soap in any shape but molds in the shapes of flowers, angels, stars and trees are popular.
Step 4
Pour the soap mixture into the cookie cutters, leaving a 1/8 inch edge around the tops. Remove the cookie cutters after 3 to 4 days, and you'll have shaped soap.
Handmade Soap Molds
Step 1
Get a piece of plywood that is at least 12-by-12 inches. This will serve as the base of your mold.
Step 2
Cut four pieces of plywood to use as the edges of your mold. All four pieces should match the edges of your base in length and be approximately 2 inches wide.
Step 3
Affix the four sides to the base, using nails or wood glue.
Step 4
Line the mold with wax paper.
Step 5
Place the soap solution in the mold. Allow the soap to harden for several days, and then use a sharp knife to cut the soap into bars.
