How to Remove Soap From a Mold
Overview
Homemade soap made via a cold-process method can be used in the home, sold online or at craft fairs, or given as gifts. Handmade soaps allow the beginning crafter and the seasoned soaper alike to make soap from the ingredients they want, without extra chemicals. Removing soap from a mold can be more difficult when small soaps or inflexible molds are involved. When removing soap from a mold, wear a pair of glovesm as the soap is still considered green, or uncured.
Step 1
Choose a soap mold that will not hinder you from removing the set soap. Wooden molds or homemade molds may be lined with freezer paper or heavy wax paper. Leave enough paper on either side to form paper handles that can be grasped and pulled to remove the soap. Round molds, including PVC pipes, may also be lined with a rolled-up piece of wax paper.
Step 2
Enable the soap to release more easily when set by leaving at least 1/4 inch of space between the poured soap and the top of the mold. Let the soap sit for a minimum of 24 hours before attempting to remove it.
Step 3
Place a towel on your work surface. Pull the mold away from the edges of a flexible mold to form air bubbles along the sides of the soap.
Step 4
Turn the soap mold over and work the soap out of the mold from the bottom. Remove the soap from a flexible mold by gently pressing on the back of the mold. Identify any air pockets you see forming between the flexible mold and the soap. Use pressure to the perimeter of the air bubble to work the soap out of the mold. Push on the bottom of the mold to pop out the soap.
Step 5
Place the soap mold in the freezer for 15 minutes if it will not come out. Freezing it will help release the soap from the mold. Use the freezer to remove soap set in Plexiglas molds or PVC pipes.
Step 6
Shave excess soap from the top of the mold if it contains small, embedded shapes. The shapes can then be popped out of the mold.
Step 7
Cut the soap with a wire cutter for even cuts. Place the cut soap on racks or drying stands. Let them cure for another 4 to 6 weeks.
