How to Mold Soap in Balls
Overview
A melt and pour soap base provides quick soap ready to mold within a few minutes and ready to use within a few hours. Not only is it quick and easy to make soap balls, but you can easily create any fragrance or color you prefer. With this soap ball recipe, you won't want to stop with just one color. Make up several batches and display multicolored soap balls in the guest bathroom or fill a glass jar and present them as a gift to someone special.
Step 1
Prepare the soap base by cutting the melt and pour soap into large chunks and measuring the appropriate amount for your project. You can purchase melt and pour soap at your local craft store or order from an online merchant such as Brambleberry, which sells several types of melt and pour soaps as well as other soap making supplies (see Resources below). Place the soap chunks in the top pan of a double boiler. Add water to the bottom pan to a depth of 3 inches. Heat on medium heat until the water begins to boil. Add colorant while the soap is melting and stir with a wooden spoon to distribute color evenly. Allow the soap to melt completely.
Step 2
Remove from the heat and allow the soap mix to cool slightly and add any fragrance you prefer. Start with 1/4 oz. of soap fragrance per pound of soap. Adjust the amount to create the degree of scent you desire. This may cause the soap mixture to become cloudy. Stir with a wooden spoon until the soap clears. Allow the soap to cool until it can be worked with using your hands. Placing the pan in cool water and stirring constantly to evenly disperse the heat will speed the process.
Step 3
Select a small amount of soap and roll it into a ball in your hands. Press firmly to create a solid ball of soap. Place the soap balls on a sheet of waxed paper to cool and harden. Line a small box with tissue paper and place a single layer of soap balls on top of the tissue. Cover these with tissue paper and repeat the process. You can also store soap balls in a decorative glass container. Keep the container sealed tightly to prevent moisture from entering and causing the balls to stick together.
