How to Melt Soap Into a Mold
Overview
Making homemade soap provides you with an opportunity to create a wide variety of scents and shapes. Although some methods require the use of lye and oils to create the base, you can easily make your own soap with a pre-made base designed for adding your own colors and scents. This simple melt-and-pour method avoids the risks associated with handling lye and is quick and easy to do.
Step 1
Purchase melt-and-pour soap base at a craft store or at an online merchant. Brambleberry (see resources) sells melt-and-pour soap base in a variety of types along with fragrances and dyes made specifically for soap making. Cut the soap base into large chunks for easy melting. Measure the appropriate amount of soap base. If you choose to use the microwave, place the soap chunks in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover with plastic wrap to prevent moisture from escaping and heat on high for 30 seconds. Remove and stir to distribute unmelted chunks and reheat for 15 seconds. Microwave temperatures vary. Adjust time accordingly.
Step 2
Use a double boiler if preferred. Place the soap chunks in the top pan and place over boiling water. Watch the soap carefully and remove from heat as soon as it has melted. Do not overheat. You can make a double boiler by placing a small saucepan inside a larger pan. Fill the bottom pan to 2 to 3 inches with water and bring to a boil.
Step 3
Remove the melted soap from the heat source and stir in any fragrance and mix until the soap loses any cloudy effects from the fragrance. As a general rule, one-fourth of an ounce is enough for one pound of soap. Adjust to suit your taste in scents. If you wish to add coloring, do this while the soap is melting.
Step 4
Pour the soap into soap molds. Spray the top of the soap lightly with rubbing alcohol, if preferred. This will prevent bubbles from forming on the top of the soap. Allow to set until the soap is hard and remove from the mold. This soap is ready to use right away. Display in a soap dish or wrap in tissue paper and tie up with a bow. It also can be wrapped in decorative plastic wrap. Store in a cool dry area.
